Program: Weekend Family Tour

Saturdays at 10:00am June through August 2020

This 45-minute interpretive tour of the Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum will begin in the Depot Visitor Center at 10:00am every Saturday morning, June through August. The group will explore our collection of historic steam locomotives and rolling stock, turntable, and the back shop all while learning about the responsibility that generations of railroad tradesmen held to care for the equipment and locomotives they worked with. Children must be accompanied by at least one (1) adult chaperone.

Children ages 3-16 are $10.00 per child, Adult Chaperone 17+ Free

Program: Story Time and Explore

Thursday, June 11, 2020 at 1:00pm

During this 45-minute program kids and families will gather to hear a reading of Watty Piper’s classic children’s book, The Little Engine That Could. Story time will be followed by a brief trip inside the Roundhouse where the story will come to life as the group explores the history of different locomotive types that appear in the story. This program will include passenger cars, freight engines, switch engines, and more. Depending on the weather, story time may be held inside a passenger car or on the platform outside of the depot. For this program each child will receive a bookmark to track their visits and enter to win a special prize, a ride in the cab of one of our steam locomotives in the fall!

Program: Railroad Heritage Career Day

Thursday, July 9, 2020 at 1:00pm

For this program, children will have an opportunity to visit different stations around the museum to learn about the workers, the tools, and the trades that kept the railroads running throughout the age of steam! This interpretive program will start in the depot and then head across the tracks to the roundhouse. Visitors will learn about various railroad and roundhouse jobs that were essential to the railroad’s operation including engineers, firemen, brakemen, hostlers, pipe fitters, and machinists.

Program: A Day of STEAM

Thursday, August 13, 2020 at 1:00pm

This program we will explore how a steam engine operates and discover some of the key components of the locomotive. Using an interactive timeline, children will explore the past to understand key events that led to the revolutionary changes brought by the railroad. Participants in this program will also have an opportunity to build their own locomotives with blocks in a hands-on activity.

Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum Summer Drawing

Each child that visits the Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum for all three summer programs and one family tour will receive a bookmark allowing them to track their visits throughout the summer. After participating in all three programs and one Saturday morning tour they will be entered into a drawing. The winner of the randomly selected drawing will win a free ride in the cab of one of our steam locomotives later in the fall.
