Volunteer News!

February 7, 2020

Hello Volunteers!

I wanted to touch base with everyone before getting too far into the month of February. We are planning our third installment of the winter speaker series for the evening of Wednesday February 12th at 6pm in the Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum depot visitor center. This program will feature Mr. Rick Hannegan a volunteer from Operation Lifesaver who will discuss railroad safety, interpreting railroad crossings, and safely navigating other railroad properties and facilities. This is a free program open to the public. If you are interested in attending be sure to preregister on the website. Due to extenuating circumstances it looks as though we will not be able to present a March speaker but we have tentatively scheduled a speaker for April 8th at 6PM. I will be in touch regarding this event as more information becomes available.

We are planning to welcome additional volunteers to the team this spring. I have planned an orientation meeting with those folks coming up soon. In addition I would like to get the entire volunteer team together for our annual all volunteer meeting on Saturday March 7th from 10AM to 12 noon. During the meeting we will cover upcoming events and programs, discuss any changes for the new season, we’ll have a chance for existing volunteers to meet new folks, and I will have volunteer waivers and a few other forms for everyone to fill out for the new 2020 tour season. We have also identified a need for volunteers as well as staff who serve as Site Interpreters and/or Tour Assistants “Pushers” to become certified in CPR and First Aid. I have been in touch with the local fire department and we have scheduled a First Aid/CPR class for volunteers and staff on Saturday April 4th. Moving forward tour assistants or “pushers” will be asked to carry first aid kits that include AEDs but this lifesaving equipment will do no good if we are not trained to use it. Everyone will have a chance to sign-up for this course at the all-volunteer meeting in April. If there is any chance that you will be serving as an interpreter or “pusher” this year, please strongly consider participating in this course.

Please give me a call or reply to this email if you will be unable to participate in any one or more of these important volunteer team events. It is very important that each volunteer participating in the 2020 tour season files all of the necessary paperwork with our office so that we can have a safe and enjoyable tour season. It is also essential that we have accurate updated waivers, email addresses, physical addresses, and phone numbers for each volunteer in order to encourage communication.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to reach out to me.

Thanks so much and I look forward to working with you this season!
